Arirang Traditional Folk Song under UNESCO Heritage List

Korea's traditional folk song "Arirang" is almost certain to be on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list next month, Seoul officials said Monday. Arirang was among 18 nominations that have been recommended for the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by a subsidiary body of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, according to the Cultural Heritage Administration.

A final decision is due to be made at the committee's meeting scheduled for Dec. 3-7 at the U.N. body's headquarters in Paris. Given that there have been no known eliminations of nominations sent to the final round, chances are very high that Arirang will be selected, officials at the government agency said.

South Korea currently has 14 items on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List, including the Royal Ancestral Rite and Ritual Music at the Jongmyo Shrine, which the kings of the Joseon Dynasty used in ancestral memorial ceremonies, and "pansori," a traditional Korean style of narrative song.

The subpanel gave Arirang high ratings for having been constantly recreated generation after generation, playing an important role in forming Korean identity and consolidating national unity, according to the officials.

There are 11 monolithic cave churches that were built on 13th century by the King Lalibela. Only 4 cave churches were finished and the remains are still unfinished. These churches and its surroundings are called 'New Jerusalem'. Lalibela is a high place of Ethiopian Christianity, still today a place of pilmigrage and devotion. Holy City Demands UNESCO Heritage Status

The local NGO Amritsar Vikas Manch has demanded from Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to bring pass a resolution in the state Assembly asking the Centre to approach UNESCO for heritage status to the 'holy city' of Amritsar. Heritage status to the holy city Amritsar In a letter written letters to Badal, Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and a copy to local MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, the NGO asked them to bring the resolution in the upcoming budget session of Vidhan Sabha. Charanjit Singh Gumtala President of the Manch said Chief Minister had given a public statement in 2009 promising that his party would bring this resolution in the Assembly, and after getting approval in the house it will be forwarded to the Centre with request to grant heritage status to the holy city. But even after lapsing of so much time no headway had been made'', stated Gumtala.
